Some Info About Opioids

Street opioids encompass various forms of the drug, both illicit and diverted from legal sources. Here’s a breakdown of common types:
1. Heroin:
  • A highly addictive opioid processed from morphine, a naturally occurring substance extracted from the seed pod of the opium poppy plant.
  • Typically sold as a white or brownish powder that can be snorted, smoked, or injected.
  • Often cut with other substances, including fentanyl, which significantly increases the risk of overdose.
2. Fentanyl:
  • A potent synthetic opioid, significantly stronger than morphine and heroin.
  • Can be found in various forms: powder, pills, and even laced into other drugs without the user’s knowledge.
  • Illegally manufactured fentanyl is a major driver of the opioid overdose crisis due to its potency and unpredictable nature.
3. Illicitly Manufactured Fentanyl (IMF):
  • This refers specifically to fentanyl that is made illegally, as opposed to pharmaceutical fentanyl which is legally produced for medical use.
  • Often mixed with other drugs like heroin or cocaine to increase their potency and lower production costs.
  • The unpredictable nature of IMF potency makes it extremely dangerous and a major contributor to overdose deaths.
4. Counterfeit Pills:
  • These are pills made to look like prescription opioids, such as oxycodone (OxyContin) or hydrocodone (Vicodin), but often contain fentanyl or other dangerous substances.
  • They are often sold on the street or online and can be indistinguishable from legitimate pills, posing a significant risk to unsuspecting users.
5. Other Prescription Opioids:
  • Prescription painkillers like oxycodone, hydrocodone, morphine, and codeine can be diverted from legal channels and sold on the street.
  • These are often obtained through theft, fraud, or by individuals who are prescribed the medication and then sell it.
Important Considerations:
  • Potency Variation: The strength of street opioids can vary significantly, especially with the presence of fentanyl, making it difficult to know the actual dose being taken and greatly increasing the risk of overdose.
  • Adulteration: Street opioids are often mixed with other substances, including fentanyl, stimulants, and other drugs, making their effects unpredictable and potentially deadly.
  • Risk of Overdose: Due to the high potency and unpredictable nature of street opioids, especially those containing fentanyl, the risk of overdose is significantly elevated.
